Essay Writing — Structure & Framework
What Examiners Look For
A competitive exam essay is evaluated on: Content & Relevance (are you addressing the topic?), Structure & Flow (introduction, body, conclusion), Language Quality (grammar, vocabulary, sentence variety), Analytical Depth (multiple perspectives, critical thinking), and Originality (fresh examples, balanced views).
The 5-Part Essay Structure
1. Introduction (10–15% of word count)
- Start with a hook: a quote, a striking statistic, a thought-provoking question, or a brief anecdote.
- Define the topic if necessary.
- State your thesis: your central argument or the direction of your essay.
- Example hook for "Education in Digital Age": "When a 12-year-old in rural Rajasthan studies algebra via a smartphone, and a student in Tokyo learns Hindustani classical music through a YouTube tutorial — the classroom has become borderless."
2. Background/Context (10–15%)
- Provide historical context or current relevance.
- Set the stage — why is this topic being discussed now?
- Introduce key terms or concepts.
3. Body Paragraphs (55–65%)
- Each paragraph = one main idea (topic sentence + evidence/examples + analysis).
- For a 1000-word essay: 3–4 body paragraphs.
- Include: government policies, data, case studies, constitutional provisions, international examples.
- Present both sides (advantages/disadvantages or multiple viewpoints).
4. Counterarguments & Rebuttal
- Acknowledge opposing views — this shows intellectual maturity.
- Then rebut with evidence or nuance.
5. Conclusion (10–15%)
- Summarise key points (don't repeat verbatim).
- Offer a forward-looking statement or call for action.
- End memorably: link back to your opening hook.
